Springing Into a New Fitness Routine: 4 Tips for Starting the Season off Right

Spring’s all about renewal, regrowth and the opportunity for a fresh start. It’s so refreshing. The days are getting longer and the weather, it’s warming up too, giving you the opportunity to get out more and breathe in some fresh air. Finally! Spring also provides the chance to refresh and recommit to a new or revamped fitness routine.

So how exactly do you push yourself after all those winter months? You set a goal, get into the right mindset and find ways to set yourself up for long-term success. This is the perfect time to start a new routine, a new challenge, and uncover a new you.. Whether you're a seasoned athlete or just beginning your fitness journey, here are some essential tips to getting on track and achieving your health goals. Ready, set, spring forward!

1. Goals, Goals, Goal and how to STICK with Them

Before diving into a new fitness routine, the most important thing you can do is make and set goals. Ask yourself questions like:

Do you want to build strength?

Is your goal to lose weight?

Do you want to increase flexibility?

Is your goal to boost endurance?

All these specifics will help you and your CrossFit coach develop a plan to get you exactly where you want to be. Having a specific objective ensures you stay motivated and measure your progress. Those SMART—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals as we like to call it, always set you up for success. SMART goals for example look like "I want to run a 5K in under 30 minutes by the end of June," instead of “I want to get fit.” We all want to get fit, but if we focus on the specifics the game plan becomes that much more meaningful.

Your workouts should be treated like important appointments. Blocking off a dedicated time in your calendar, and staying consistent. Consistency is key, so aim to exercise at the same time each day and establish that routine. If you’re a morning person, morning workouts can help kickstart your day with energy. Work better at night? No sweat, CrossFit is available and some find evening sessions can serve as a great way to unwind after a busy day.

2. Start Slowly and Build Gradually

Jumping into an intense workout routine too quickly can lead to burnout or injury. If you're returning after a break, ease into it. Start with low-impact exercises and gradually increase the intensity. And don’t forget to listen to your body—soreness is normal, but pain is a sign you may be overdoing it. Slow and steady always wins the race right? Try that approach to build endurance and prevent setbacks.

Aside from overdoing it, you can also sideline yourself if you don’t hydrate or give your body the proper nutrition it needs to power through your tough workouts. Proper hydration and nutrition play a crucial role in your fitness journey. Not to mention that as temperatures rise, your body will need more water to stay hydrated, especially during workouts. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day and more if you're engaging in intense exercise. Fuel your body with a balanced diet rich in lean proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates. You are what you eat!

3. Find or Grab An Accountability Partner

Working out with a friend or joining a community like CrossFit Threefold can make all the difference in the world. It’s the camaraderie, dedication and uplifting environment that helps keep you accountable and push yourself further. Knowing that someone else is expecting you to show up is also a powerful motivator. Just think of how surrounding yourself with supportive people can make you feel, especially when you hit those mental roadblocks, or challenges.

4. Rest, Recovery and Everything in Between

Keeping a fitness journal or using a fitness app can help you monitor your progress and celebrate small victories. If you’ve never done this before, no worries, because your CrossFit coach will be there every step of the way. Guiding, altering if necessary and working with you on a personalized plan that’ll keep you coming back for more. Seeing how far you've come can be incredibly motivating and help you stay on course.

What you also have to remember is that although this is the best time to get out there and improve your health, life happens. Yes, with sports, work and all holidays or spring get-to-gethers, there will be days when you miss a workout or indulge in an unhealthy meal. Instead of letting setbacks derail your progress, view them as learning experiences. Don't be too hard on yourself—focus on getting back on track rather than dwelling on mistakes.

Rest and recovery are essential components of any fitness routine and your success! Overworking your body without allowing time for rest leads to injury and fatigue. Make sure to get enough sleep, include some stretching into your routine, and take rest days when needed. Activities like yoga, meditation, cold plunging and massage can help with muscle recovery and overall well-being.

Above all, remember to enjoy the ride. Staying committed to fitness is easier when you're enjoying the process. Set mini-goals, reward yourself for reaching them and be proud of yourself! Find ways to make exercise something you look forward to rather than a task on your to-do list.

Spring is YOUR Time to Shine

It’s your time. As the weather keeps getting warmer, make it your mission to rev up your health and fitness. Take advantage of the beautiful weather and choose activities that motivate you.  Appreciate the progress you’re making, and remember, just like the buds popping up on the trees, fitness takes time. All you need to do is keep showing up. Focus forward, set realistic goals, and find joy in movement! Now, spring forward and get ready for a healthier, stronger you!
